The main task of our school is the development of a free mindful person.
We do not know how the world will be functioning in 20 years. And that's why we can't teach children how to act "correctly" and what they need to know. The school can no longer be a factory that produces "educated people" who are evaluated according to some standard. On the contrary, our task is to help each child find their way and their place in the world. Everything that happens at Maibutni serves this fundamental purpose.
In our school, we never decide for children unilaterally, instead we vote and agree on common rules together. There are only a few basic rules that we announce before the beginning of the study, and all other rules are created, discussed and altered during school town meetings. Everyone has the right to vote and the right to categorically disagree. This is how a healthy community is formed, where everyone is ready to state their needs, respect the boundaries of others, and look for solutions that ultimately benefit everyone.
There are no compulsory subjects at our school – children freely choose what they want to study. Each of our teachers has their own knowledge map — a list of all their subjects, which, in our opinion, should be understood by every adult educated person. By choosing the topics in these maps, children see a whole picture of the world—what can be studied in general and how each topic is related to the others.
